By Rochelle Owusu-Antwi & Matthew Payne: Excited school pupils are set to accompany the Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent to a parade in London.

Twelve pupils from Trentham High School aged 11- 13 were the lucky few to be selected to travel on an open top bus travelling through the streets.

The invite has been extended to the students because the 684th Lord Mayor of London David Wootton’s father comes from the Potteries.

Mr Wootton is due to take up his post from tomorrow (November 11) and the parade will take place in the capital on Saturday, starting at the Guildhall Art Gallery and ending on The Strand.

Students were told they would be representing both Trentham High School and Stoke-on-Trent. They then had to write a letter of application explaining why they were the best person to be chosen.

Pat Woodward, achievement manager at the school, said the children were "incredibly excited".

"There are actually two students who have never ever been to London before so they are incredibly excited, not only to be taking part but also to be seeing it for the first time."

Student Aiesha Day, 11, added: "I'm really excited and I can't wait to be in the parade. I'm looking forward to seeing Big Ben and Buckingham Palace."

Lord Mayor of Stoke -on- Trent, Councillor Terry Follows, is looking forward to Saturday's proceedings.

"It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to advertise Stoke-on-Trent on the Lord Mayor's Parade in London," he said.

"It's going right through the heart of London and the Business Quarter so it's absolutely fabulous.

"It's wonderful for the Lord Mayor to ask us to go and put a float in the procession because his father comes from Stoke-on-Trent and still lives in Burslem."

The event will be free to the public and shown live on BBc1 at 10.45am.
